Costa Rica officially the Republic of Costa Rica is a country in Central America. Costa Rica is first country in the world that has abolished its army constitutionally. The country is bordered by Nicaragua to the north, Panama to the south-southeast, the Pacific Ocean to the west and south, and the Caribbean Sea to the east.
The present day Christopher Columbus discovered Costa Rica in 1502 during his fourth and last voyage to the new world. People started living in Costa Rica around 1522. For nearly three decades Spanish people used the land and resources here. Spanish called Costa Rica the Rich Coast, as they found some valuable minerals and gold in little quantity here.
Costa Rica declared its independence from Spain in 1821 and joined league of other American nations. Costa Rica announces its sovereignty in 1838. The first peaceful and honest general elections for electing the government held in 1899 and thus the country has started its perfect voyage of sovereignty. Though there were two lapses- in 1917-19, Federico Tinoco ruled as a dictator, and, in 1948, Jose Figueres led an armed uprising in the wake of a disputed presidential election. The civil war continues for 44 days resulted in the winning of Junta. A fresh constitution was formed, military was abolished and general elections were held.
In 1953, Figuerers won the election under new constitution and became the President of Costa Rica.
The geographic location of Costa Rica is 10° north of equator and 84° west of prime meridian. The volcano in Costa Rica is Irazú Volcano 11,257 ft and the highest point is Cerro Chirripó 12,500 ft, the fifth highest peak in Central America. Lake Arenal is the largest lake in Costa Rica.
The government in Costa Rica is democratic republic. The country has very strong constitution. The President of Costa Rica is head of the state and head of the government. President is elected for a four-year term. The administration of Costa Rica is divided into 7 provinces and 81 districts.
The Costa Rica’s economy is expanding steadily under the government’s 7 years plan of expansion in high tech industry. The government offers exemption from taxes to global investors. The main contributors to Costa Rica’s economy are electronics, pharmaceuticals, financial outsourcing, software development, and ecotourism industries. These industries are growing at faster pace in Costa Rica. Costa Rica’s high level of education attracts investors from all over the world. Costa Rica connects well to Asian and European Market through sea routes. Costa Rica lies in the same time zone as that of United States and hence has easy access to American markets.
Costa Rica is an active member of United Nations and the Organization of American States and proclaimed permanent neutrality in 1993. The Costa Rica is making efforts in the direction of establishing UN High Commission for Human Rights. Costa Rica is also the first nation that has recognized the jurisdiction of the Inter-American Human Rights Court, based in San Jose.
Costa Rica is home to different sorts of animals and plants. The Corcovado National Park is place to see bio diversity of Costa Rica in abundance. The Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve is home for two thousand plant species, and numerous orchids.
