Educational Profile


Education in Costa Rica is free to all. The constitution of Costa Rica makes education compulsory to all citizens. Receiving education is responsibility of people. According to CIA World Fact book, the literacy rate in Costa Rica is high 96% probably the highest in Latin America. Though preschool education and general basic education are compulsory but people are not forced to learn against their wish. The Ministry of Public Education is the sole authority for administering education in Costa Rica.

The elementary schooling in Costa Rica is divided into six-year grades, students are taught subjects like mathematics, social studies, language (spanish) and science. Topics in music, religion, physical health and arts are also taught.

Costa Rican High schools ends up at 11th grade. The student who finished 11th from any of the high school receives Costa Rican Bachillerato Diploma accredited by the Costa Rican Ministry of Education. Schools that offer classes to the 12th grade offer either the International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma, accredited by the IBO in Geneva, Switzerland or USA High School Diploma, accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS).
