Admission Requirements for Higher Education in Costa Rica

Higher education in Costa Rica is offered by both public and private universities. The registration procedure varies depending on the type of higher education institution. Read on to know about the registration process and requirements-

Registration Procedure 

For State/Public Universities in Costa Rica

Prospective students who wish to apply to higher education institutions in Costa Rica must register themselves. Registration for admittance into Costa Rican higher education institutions can be done in 2 ways:

First way: Register at the admission portal. Follow the instruction given on the website. After registering, a confirmation of registration and application number will be sent to your email id.

** Candidates must have a valid identity card to register themselves on the admission portal.

Second way: Apply directly to the higher education institution of your choice- Fill in an application form, submit the registration fee for the University of your Choice; and submit the application form along with the documents and payment receipt to the concerned university. 

For all the other higher education institutions in Costa Rica-

Students must apply directly to the higher education institution of their choice. Fill in an application form and submit it along with the required documents. 

Supporting Documentation

  • Application form and fees
  • General secondary education certificate or its equivalent- Original and photocopy
  • A copy of passport or any other valid identity card, and passport-size photos
  • Document indicating that educational institution that has issued the certificate/diploma/degree has the legal right to do so. 
  • Educational transcripts or documents of modules attended and score obtained; Copy of degree/diploma- Bachillerato or Licenciatura or equivalent
  • A copy of thesis or dissertation (for candidates who have done undergraduate and opting for graduate studies)
  • Health certificate
  • Letter of recommendation: At least 2 letters of recommendation
  • Spanish language proficiency certificate
  • Police record of non-delinquency
  • Admission essay: It should include academic strengths and weakness, reasons for applying to this particular study programme and institution, career goals, professional experience (if any), what motivates you, what after this programmes, and what you hope to gain from attending this course. Be real!
*All the documents must be translated in Spanish and certified by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Costa Rica. 

Entrance Examination/Admission Test

Many public universities in Costa Rica conduct entrance examination in Spanish. Students are required to undertake the exam and obtain a minimum score in order to get a place in the university. International students who pass this entrance exam are not required to undertake the Spanish language test, as by passing this test, it is proved that the student has a working knowledge in Spanish language
